Back On My Feet - In 24 - 2014 - Lone Ranger - Going The Distance!

July 19th-20th 2014

July 18th - Raj and I picked up our bib numbers, t-shirts and discovered that all runners needed to get their vitals taken. I had not been able to sleep the night before and I had forgotten not taken my BP pill so I knew my blood pressure was a bit high. However, not as high as 180/110. I was told by the race doctor I couldn't be cleared to run the race. Fortunately, I was told that I could come back the next day and get my vitals again. I knew I had to get to a CVS and get my prescription refill and try to sleep. After a salt-less pasta dinner, I took my BP pills and went straight to sleep.

July 20th - The plan was to get my BP as low as possible to avoid disqualification. I went out for a mile run, took my BP pill, and a long cold shower. I layed down on the ground before getting checked by an EMT and my blood pressure was a surprising 150/79. The EMT shook his head while relucntantly saying go ahead. I ate a banana and a pretzel before walking over to the pre-race meeting. This was

The laps:

Lap 1 -- 1:27:13.7 / Pace = 10:19 / Distance = 8.460 / Time = 1:27:13.7

I had trained by running like a marathon but doing two long runs on the weekends back to back. Sunday long run

Lap 2 -- 1:32:05.0 / Pace = 10:53 / Distance = 16.92 / Time = 2:59:18.8

Lap 3 -- 2:01:23.5 / Pace = 14:21 / Distance = 25.38 / Time = 5:00:42.3

Lap 4 -- 1:46:24.3 / Pace = 12:35 / Distance = 33.84 / Time = 6:47:06.7

Lap 5 -- 2:17:50.6 / Pace = 16:18 / Distance = 42.30 / Time =  9:04:57.3

Lap 6 -- 1:54:27.4 / Pace = 13:32 / Distance = 50.76 / Time = 10:59:24.7

Lap 7 -- 2:15:43.4 / Pace = 16:03 / Distance = 59.22 / Time = 13:15:08.2

Lap 8 -- 2:01:22.0 / Pace = 14:21 / Distance = 67.68 / Time = 15:16:30.2

Lap 9 -- 2:02:09.4 / Pace = 14:26 / Distance = 76.14 / Time = 17:18:39.7

Lap 10 -- 2:00:34.7 / Pace = 14:15 / Distance = 84.60 / Time = 19:19:14.5

Lap 11 -- 2:17:37.1 / Pace = 16:16 / Distance = 93.06 / Time = 21:36:51.6

This was the toughest lap and one I could not have completed without Carl running with me. At 7:34 a.m., I knew I had less than 2:30 hours to complete this lap. Carl took my headlight and he catched up to me before the Rocky Statute.  I knew it had taken me over 2:20h to complete the last lap and I was feeling like given up at this point. Carl kept saying all you have to do is keep running.  I felt like a boxer who had survived 15 rounds wthout getting knocked out. Later on Carl admitted I looked like crap at the start of this lap. I knew the bikers checking on runners who kept asking me if I was okay thought the same thing . I simply kept saying, I'm feel great! I had to dig deep and kept telling myself that I had a good chance to go over 100. I didn't want to come back because I had to but because it was my choice. I was running, not fast but I was moving. During some stretches Carl was going as fast walking as me running. After the bridge I remember one voluneer running a bit with me and Carl.  I knew I had it in the bag with 1 hour to go and two miles to go. This was the start of my victory and hallucination lap. I told Carl I wanted to get blessed by a priest walking towards us.  Carl looked at me and said, "that's a homeless guy with a white scarf." I started hugging every volunteer and saying hi to everyone walking towards us. I know some people were probably wondering why there was this guy at 7 in the morning saying hi to everyone. Once I got to the last water stop, I knew it I had it in the bag and all I had to do is walk.  Carl said, "if you go to the next water stop you might have a higher seed." I got to the 101.52 and I heard congratulations from all the volunteers.  In a moment of weakness, I said, "I want to keep going."  I quickly heard, "are you sure?" Yes, I want to keep going, was my only reesponse.

The start of the last lap was the toughtest momement

Lap 12 -- 1:57:04.0 / Pace = 13:50 / Distance = 101.52 / Time = 23:33:55.7

Carl said, "all you have to do is walk."  I thought okay, I can keep going but my knee thought diferently. I tried to run and walk but I was going very slow.  I knew I had over 25 minutes to get to the next water stop.  Carl was by my side and kept pacing me.  My GPS watch was dead already and the battery had died at 99 miles.  At this point I could barely believed I had gone over 100 miles. Who does that? Me, that's who!

After Running for 24 hours!
Next Water Stop - 1 Mile -- 0:26:54.3 / Distance = 102.52 / Time = 24:00:00.0

Total Mileage: 102.520 at 23:33:55.7
